Privacy & Data Use

Last updated: 1 April 2026

After the Will New Zealand ("we", "us", "our") respects your privacy and complies with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 and its Information Privacy Principles. This page explains how we collect, use, store and share your personal information when you use our website and the NZ Life Organiser tools.

By using our website or providing your personal information, you agree to this Privacy & Data Use Statement.

1. Who we are and how to contact us

After the Will New Zealand provides the free NZ Life Organiser pack and related information to help you organise your everyday accounts, digital assets and contact details alongside your formal planning documents. It is operated from Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, with a New Zealand contact address.

We have appointed a Privacy Officer as required by the Privacy Act. You can contact our Privacy Officer using the details above.

2. What personal information we collect

We only collect the personal information we need for our functions and services.

2.1 Information you provide via the access form

When you request access to the NZ Life Organiser pack, we collect:

  • Full name
  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • Region (Auckland & North Island / Wellington & Central / Christchurch & South Island)
  • Age band (18–29, 30–39, 40–49, 50–59, 60+)

2.2 Information in your organiser

The NZ Life Organiser tools are kept by you on your own device or in hard copy — we do not receive, store or read what you write in your organiser. We only ever hold the basic contact details you submit through our online forms, not the content of your organiser.

2.3 Website and technical information

Like most websites, we may collect basic log data (IP address, browser type, pages viewed, date/time of visits) and use cookies or similar technologies to remember access on your browser. You can control cookies through your browser settings.

3. How we use your information and why

3.1 To provide access to the organiser pack

  • To email you a one-time access code and verify your email address.
  • To unlock the organiser pack on your browser once the correct code is entered.

3.2 To communicate with you about the tools

To send you important information about the organiser pack, including updates, changes and improvements, and tips on how to use and update your organiser. You can opt out at any time using the unsubscribe option in our messages.

3.3 To introduce you to suitable New Zealand providers

Where it is a good fit, we may share your contact details with selected New Zealand providers (for example wills and estate-planning lawyers, trustee companies, financial advisers or similar) so they can contact you about related planning services. Those providers are responsible for their own privacy and communications.

3.4 To understand and improve our services

To understand, in aggregate, which age bands and regions are using the tools, and to monitor and improve our website and communications.

4. How we share personal information

We do not sell your personal information. We may disclose it only in the limited situations below.

4.1 Service providers

We may share your personal information with trusted service providers who help us operate our website, email and storage systems. They may be located in New Zealand or overseas and can only use your information to support our services.

4.2 New Zealand provider partners

Where suitable, we may share your name, region and contact details with selected New Zealand providers (such as lawyers, trustee companies or financial advisers). We aim to work only with providers who are reputable and who agree to handle your personal information in line with New Zealand privacy expectations.

4.3 Legal and safety reasons

We may disclose your personal information if required by law or if reasonably necessary to comply with legal obligations or protect rights, property or safety.

5. Disclosing information outside New Zealand

Some of our service providers may be based outside New Zealand. When we send personal information overseas, we take steps to ensure it is protected to standards comparable to the Privacy Act 2020 — by using providers subject to the Act, providers in countries with comparable safeguards, or by putting contractual protections in place.

If you have questions about where your information is stored or processed, please contact us.

6. How long we keep your information

We keep your contact details only for as long as they are needed for the purposes described in this statement or as required by law — generally while we are actively providing the organiser pack and related updates and you have not opted out of communications.

We may retain limited records (such as email logs or unsubscribe records) for a longer period where reasonably necessary for legal, audit or compliance purposes.

7. Security

We take reasonable steps to keep your personal information safe from loss, unauthorised access, use, modification, disclosure and other misuse, including using reputable cloud service providers, restricting access, and using passwords, access controls and, where appropriate, encryption.

If a privacy breach occurs that is likely to cause serious harm, we will assess and, where required, notify the Office of the Privacy Commissioner and affected individuals as soon as practicable, in line with the Privacy Act 2020.

8. Your rights – accessing and correcting your information

You have the right to request access to the personal information we hold about you and to request that we correct it if you believe it is wrong. To make a request, email us at contact@afterthewill.co.nz with enough detail to identify you and the information you are referring to.

If you are not satisfied with how we have handled your request or any privacy concern, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at www.privacy.org.nz.

9. Marketing emails and unsubscribe

When you submit the access form, you agree that we may email you about your access to the organiser pack, tips and updates about the tools, and related planning services and introductions to suitable New Zealand providers.

You can opt out of marketing emails at any time by clicking the unsubscribe option in any marketing email from us. We will action unsubscribe requests as soon as reasonably practicable.
